Bedside Table Height: How to Match It to Your Mattress
Start with your mattress height, then check reach, drawer clearance and lamp space. A practical bedside-table measuring guide for Singapore bedrooms.
On this page
A bedside table can fit neatly beside the bed and still be awkward to use. You reach for your glasses and find the top too low, or sit up to switch off the lamp because it is farther away than it looked in the photograph.
Before choosing a finish or the number of drawers, measure the height of your mattress from the floor. That gives you a useful starting point for choosing a bedside table in a Singapore bedroom, whether you have a low platform bed or a taller storage base.
Start at the top of the mattress
A tabletop close to the height of your mattress, or a little above it, is a sensible starting point. This is also the approach in Room & Board’s bed and nightstand pairing guide. Treat it as a shortlist filter, then check what feels comfortable from your usual position in bed.
Measure from the finished floor to the top of the mattress, including a topper if you use one. Ignore the headboard height: it tells you very little about where your hand will land. The height of the bed’s side rail is not a reliable substitute either, especially when the mattress sits partly inside the frame.
If you are ordering a new bed and mattress together, ask for the height of the surface supporting the mattress. Add the mattress thickness and any topper. Do not add mattress thickness to the frame’s overall height, which may refer to the headboard.
Compare the difference, not just the listed height
Suppose the top of your mattress is 58 cm above the floor. Here is how three hypothetical table heights compare. These are measurement examples, not catalogue specifications.
| Table height | Position beside a 58 cm mattress | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| 45 cm | 13 cm below the mattress top | Can you retrieve a small item without leaning far over the edge? |
| 58 cm | Level with the mattress top | Does the usable part of the tabletop sit within easy reach? |
| 65 cm | 7 cm above the mattress top | Can you place things down comfortably without reaching upwards around the edge? |
Equal height does not guarantee a good fit. A wide upholstered bed rail, a large gap or a table positioned too far towards the headboard can all make the surface harder to reach.
A 48 cm bedside table: what the measurement means beside your bed
The Luxury Gloss Sintered Stone Top Bedside Table is listed at 48 cm wide × 40 cm deep × 48 cm high, with 12 cm legs. Those legs are included in the listed overall height; do not add another 12 cm when comparing it with your mattress.

If your mattress top is also 48 cm from the floor, the two surfaces would be level. Against the 58 cm mattress in the example above, this table would sit 10 cm lower. That difference is worth testing at home rather than judging from a styled photograph.
Its 48 × 40 cm footprint gives you a specific rectangle to mark beside the bed. Check it with the plug connected and the nearby wardrobe open. The listing does not specify internal drawer dimensions or opening projection, so ask for those measurements if you need to store a particular item or have a tight aisle.

The sintered stone top is one part of the choice. Height, usable surface area and access to the drawers still determine how well the table works beside your bed. View the bedside table and its available options.
Test the reach before you buy
Use a stable surface you already own at roughly the proposed height, or mark the height and footprint to visualise it. Do not balance a lamp or drink on an improvised stack.
Lie in your usual sleeping position, then sit up as you would to read. Check where your hand naturally reaches for a glasses case or phone and where the lamp switch would sit. Test both positions; a table that works while sitting may feel inconvenient when you are lying down.
For a shared bed, each person should check their own side. Different habits can justify different tables: one person may need a clear top for a lamp and book, while the other wants a drawer for small belongings.
Allow for what happens when the drawers open
Closed dimensions describe only one part of the fit. A bedside drawer needs room to extend, and you need somewhere to stand or sit while using it. Ask for the drawer’s opening projection if it is not shown in the listing.
Check nearby wardrobe doors, curtains and any drawers built into the bed. A bedside cabinet can block a storage-bed drawer even when there is enough space to walk past. Mark the cabinet’s full footprint with removable tape and test the surrounding furniture before ordering.
Measure the narrowest part of the intended position. Skirting boards, plugs and protruding handles can stop a cabinet from sitting where you expected. Include those details when working out the usable space.
Check the tabletop with your actual lamp
A small cabinet may look spacious in a product photo because the styling uses a tiny lamp. Measure the base of your own lamp and consider where its shade will sit. Then allow space for the things you actually put down at night.
- Lamp: the base should be fully supported, with the switch accessible.
- Phone and charger: check cable reach and whether the plug needs space behind the cabinet.
- Glasses and book: leave a clear landing spot rather than relying on the far corner.
- Water: use a coaster suitable for the tabletop finish and follow the product’s care instructions.
If the lamp takes up nearly the whole surface, a slightly wider top may be more useful than an extra drawer. Check that the larger footprint still leaves the surrounding furniture usable.
A short checklist for comparing bedside tables online
Keep these details beside you when browsing our bedside-table collection:
- Your floor-to-mattress-top measurement, including the topper.
- The table’s assembled height, width and depth, including legs and handles.
- The reach from your usual position in bed.
- Drawer opening space and internal dimensions, if storage matters.
- Room for the lamp, charging plug and everyday items.
Save the measurements before comparing colours. A bedside table earns its place when you can reach what you need, open its storage and move around the bed comfortably.
